HOW TO MAKE A STEAM POWERED

BALLOON SCOUT IN 15MM

Photo One PARTS: (As pictured, left to right) – Small piece of card stock such as an index card, 1 ¼” Fender Washer, ½” Cut Washer measuring approximately 1 3/8” across, 1 ½” Fender Washer, ½” Wood Flathead Plug, 3/8” Wood Block, 1 3/8” Wood Robin Egg, Pierced Earring Backing, Two 4” party Skewers (Big Toothpicks), At least 6” stiff Floral Wire.

Photo Two FIRST STEP ASSEMBLIES: (As pictured, left to right) – For the balloon, card stock has been cut into 4 fin shaped pieces and glued at right angles around point of egg. Then holes were drilled in the bottom in a square pattern ½” apart. 1 ½” pieces of steel wire were glued in holes.

For the stand, The three washers were glued together in decreasing diameters from bottom to top. Then the cut plug washer was glued on top with the wide side down. A hole was drilled in this to receive the party skewer, which has had the sharp point clipped off of each end of it. This forms a pole for the whole balloon assembly to be mounted on

For the pilots basket and engine unit, a piece of the card stock is cut into a ¾” by 1 9/16” inch rectangle. This is then folded into four 3/8 inch strips. You must cut the length of the rectangle to 1 9/16, not 1 ½ because you will need the extra 1/16 to make up for the length absorbed by folding the card. Now glue the folded card around the wood block so half the inside is occupied by the block and the rest is open for the pilot to stand in. Now drill a hole into the bottom of this cockpit/engine assembly for the post of the stand to fit into. Then drill a hole into one side for the hub of the pierced earring backing to eventually be glued into. This backing is left as it is. Also, not shown, cut a 1” length of the second party skewer.

Photo Three FINAL ASSEMBLY & FINISHED PRODUCT – Carefully bend the four wires inward and then glue them down into the cockpit’s opening of the engine/cockpit unit. Make sure that the hole for the pierced earring baking is towards the rear of the balloon. Then glue the 1” section of party skewer onto the left rear side (As viewed from the front.) of the engine/cockpit unit to make a smoke stack for the engine. Finally glue the whole assembly on top of the pole of the washer stand.

DO NOT glue the earring backing on at this time. Wait until the whole model has been painted and clear coated before you glue it onto the hole you drilled into the back of the cockpit/engine unit. It forms the clear circle of a rotating propeller.

The finished balloon shows a British rifleman in the cockpit, ready to patrol the frontiers of some foreign land. I use these as individual MC scouts or as a unit of 10 as a light unit for providing cover for ground units or flanking a position.
